Another little learning curve.

By Tony

I intend to set myself the non-challenge of just using some webcams in my teaching, I’m not really going to even think deeply about use, just get them in there. Hugh at Wycombe High School, has already compiled a useful range of webcam sites and locations, classified into topics, on his department website.

Another little issue, some of the live webcams need active controls to be installed. I’m betting nothing that this will cause a problem on the school system. Another issue that keeps coming up is the lack, so far, of quality UK streaming webcams. Any one have any ideas?

Hi Tony. You’ve probably used all of these, but one of my favourite web cams is the Times Square cam at http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/timessquare/ . I have used this when starting Urban Geography topics with 14-17 year olds, and to be honest, I normally just let it run for a while and let pupils absorb what’s going on to get a feel for Cities. Also not uncommon to get a wave! With my s2 class, I have been lucky enough to be able to use some Tokyo webcams

at Rush hour, tried Shibuya, although it takes a little messing around-Have actually used this v. recently as a prelude to your ‘Lost in Translation’ resources, and again, pupils responded really well to just seeing something that was live, and got them enthused about the topic

I have also used webcams from around the world when teaching Atmospheric circulation, trying to find somewhere at the Poles, 60 degrees, 30 degrees and the equator, with some success. Hope this is of some use

    Hi Kenny

Great ideas and some brilliant links. I really like the New York one, it has been a favourite for some time and I’m going to put together a task around this. I have noticed they’ve also put live video streaming with sound which is even better.

Love the Japan one, and a great idea for introducing settlement work. I love the ability to move the camera.

I would love to know more about the atmospheric circulation lesson. If you wanted to write a brief post on this, feel free.

Another one of my favourites is the Sydney Cam

Brilliant view at the moment and the ability to take images

    Cheers

    Tony,
I will try to dig out the webcams that I used, the atmosphere lesson was a while ago now, I think before I started the blog, so the links won’t be online for me. I’m off on paternity Friday to Thursday, so if this takes a wee while, I’m not ignoring the request, just might be a little busy!!

No problem Kenny, there is no pressure.

Thanks very much for your help and comments.
